Australian Species

CHITAL STAG

Axis axis

Despite three attempts in the North Island and at least two in the South Island to introduce Chital Deer to New Zealand in the Nineteenth Century, all ended in failure.  However they survive today in the Maryvale area of Queensland, introduced by a William Hann in 1886.  The most likely original source being Sri Lanka.

The Chital’s colouring is very striking – a bright rufus fawn with white spots or flecks covering the body.

Hunting the Chital is usually undertaken in January through to early March which is their main rutting season.  The animals themselves can congregate in herds numbering dozens or more.
