Cervus elaphus

First liberated back in 1851, the Red Deer is without doubt the most widespread game animal in New Zealand, hunted relentlessly over the past   forty years. In places, the Red Deer is now making something of a comeback.  Trophies resembling those taken prior to the “deer wars” are now being taken on a more consistent basis.  Hunting these magnificent game animals is best during the rut period in the mid March-April period.
